We met in January 2020 while Jason was volunteering for a robotics event at The Hanger Aircraft museum. Sarah, still being somewhat new to Calgary, was brought along by a mutual friend to see what this robotics event was all about (little did we know our friend had a bit of a different agenda).
Explain the proposal
After a long stint up in Fort Mac in Spring 2023 - surviving on nothing but phone calls and texting - Jason finally returned home in July. Sarah knew something was up because a box had arrived that Jason said to hide until he got home. Jason was quite worried the surprise was ruined, but Sarah quickly hid the package as soon as it arrived. Once Jason got home, Sarah was so excited that she got to spend time with him in person, she completely forgot about the box.
However, weeks earlier, Jason had his proposal all planned out. He wanted to recreate our first date with a bit of a spin on it. First step was to get the ring, second was to rent the ice, and third was to get her to follow along unsuspectingly.
Finally, it was the right night. Sarah was having had a bit of a rough day, so Jason sprung it on her that they were going to go out for the night and to bring her skates and hockey gear with her. Making sure to wear the pants he wore the day we met and the day we first hung out (his distinctive yellow climbing pants), they jumped into her car and drove off for sushi. True to our unfortunate luck, the restaurant was packed and had a huge wait, so we went over to Brewhouse instead.
After dinner, we made our way over to the rink. With absolutely no idea that he had something planned, Sarah was so happy to be back on the ice. Fresh ice and a brand new net - everything was set up perfect. After skating around for a bit, Jason found the right moment and told Sarah it was time she went in net for him to shoot on. After a few shots (easy ones because there was no proper gear involved), Jason went and grabbed the special puck. This was a puck with a green apple ring pop attached to the top of it. The ring pop had been a running joke over the last few months - Sarah hates green apple flavoured anything, but promised that she would still marry him even with a green apple ring pop. Tossing the puck on the ice, Jason shoots it down towards Sarah. Following behind the puck, Jason gets down on one knee and asks Sarah to marry him. She said yes!
The green apple puck now lives in its own little display case in our living room, forever a reminder of our proposal story.
